Description: | Tropes of the haunted house setting which are of Gothic origins have become a pertinent area of research and interest due to the rising number of horror films produced annually. In Malay and Hollywood horror films which have a huge public following, the haunted house trope provides an opportunity to affect an analysis in order to interrogate the manifestations of its motif. The text of this research entails two Malay horror films, Congkak (2008) and Flat 3A (2011) as well as two Hollywood horror films The Amityville Horror (2005) and The Conjuring (2013). In order to analyze the text effectively, a unified conceptual framework termed the Structural Uncanny Haunted House Framework (SUHHF) has been constructed. The SUHHF draws from Vladimir Propp's concept of Morphology of the Folktale, Sigmund Freud's writings on the Uncanny and Joshua Comaroff's and Ong Ker- Shing's architecture of horror. The SUHHF categorizes the haunted house's setting into three main unified categories: 1) The Hazardous Transition which provides insights into the transitional elements in the house such as doors and windows, 2) The Surmounted Corpse that offers an understanding into the typical haunted house's exterior and interior forms and finally, 3) The Trojan Compartment which describes the function of the hidden spaces in the house that causes spatial misrecognition. The findings of this thesis showcase how culture and religion reveal topophobia which is the fear or loathing of places that arouse one's sense of insecurity. The haunted house not only raises apprehension and revulsion in its dwellers, but it also brings families together in order to combat evil. The implication of this thesis is that it offers a deeper appreciation of cultural and religious convergences and divergences found in both Malay and Hollywood horror films in terms of architectural motifs and tropes.,Ph.D. |
