Description: | As the number of elders in Malaysia increases coincided with the world elderly population growth, living alone and living with families seem to require public assistance to supplement the needs. Thus, congregated living arrangement as an option presents an alternative living arrangement for them. Accordingly, pondok, which has been established initially as an Islamic religious educational institution for the Muslim youth offers this opportunity especially to the Malaysian elders. Therefore, this study focuses on the pondok elders as the interest derives from the limited discussion done on pondok. Meanwhile, the transformation of pondok's functions into an elderly living arrangement offers certain religious advantages to them. Consistent with the current attention given in the sociology of ageing, this study applied a phenomenological approach. It was centred around the abductive research strategy based on the idealist ontology and social constructionism. To examine elders' worldview of social reality, in-depth interviews with twenty residents were conducted in Jeram Pondok, Selangor. The findings revealed nine essential interrelated themes. The themes of physical condition and environment, decision to stay in pondok and meanings of and feelings about pondok corresponded to the three earlier study objectives. The meanings of well-being followed by well-being dimensions of physical health condition and concern, autonomy, activity, social relationships and religion were another six themes answering the important objective of understanding their well-being. Subsequently, activity theory rooted in symbolic interactionism and gerotranscendence seemed to be more applicable in explaining pondok elders' interpretations of everyday reality. In conclusion, the construction of their worldview on pondok and well-being would give a better understanding of elders' future needs in the local socio-cultural environment. Thus, the efforts in policy planning and implementation could be expected to be more attentive to and effective for the Malaysian elders' benefits.,Ph.D. |
