Description: Research Article (RA) is considered to be the main channel of -knowledge production; however, for student writers and novice scholars writing RA is a challenging task. It is partly because of lack of exposure and awareness of the rhetorical structure and linguistic features of RAs in a particular discipline. The aim of this study is to identify rhetorical moves across different sections of RAs, namely, Introduction-Methods-Results-Discussion-Conclusion (IMRDC) in applied linguistics and to explain their communicative functions. Analysis of structural patterns of these moves in order to draw possible move sequencing and description of prominent linguistic features of the moves to show the use of frequent lexical and grammatical items in the realizations of the moves are also within the purview of this study. For this purpose, a corpus was developed comprising of 20 empirical RAs from leading and representative four journals in applied linguistics. Several move models were used as the basis for the analysis of IMRDC sections of RAs. While the Introduction section was analyzed following Swales' (1990, 2004) Create-a-research space (CARS) model, Methods section followed a simplified version of Krishnasamy (2011), analysis of Results, Discussion and Conclusion section was based on Ruiying and Allison (2003). The linguistic analysis was conducted following analytical procedures of Lim (2006, 2009, 2010, 2011a, 2011b, 2012). Move analysis reveals that three moves of Introduction, six moves of Results, five moves of Discussion and five moves of Conclusion sections are realized consecutively through eleven, ten, nine and six steps. However, the communicative purposes of Methods sections can be captured by five communicative moves where further step level division is not required. The communicative functions of these moves and steps are though not unique, there are features which are exclusively used in applied linguistics RAs. No clear schemata are noticed in the move structural patterns across sections and diverse patterns and sequences are found to be followed by the writers. Linguistic analysis reveals that there is a propensity to rely on specific lexico-grammatical structures in the realization of a particular move or a step. The findings of the study will facilitate better understanding of RAs in applied linguistics for novice scholars and contribute to these scholars' efforts to publish their research in this field.,Certification of Master's/Doctoral Thesis" is not available
