Description: This study investigates the needs of distance language learners in m-learning environment to support their language learning activities, including the acceptance of Mobile Language Learning applications. It also explores the affordances of mobile learning in supporting the development of language skills required of them, and how mobile learning is able to reduce the transactional distance, one of the most common problems among distance learners at a higher educational institution in Malaysia. This mixed method study involved 177 distance learning students. A set of questionnaire consisting 68 items based on seven variables, and interview protocols were employed to collect the data. AMOS from Structural Equation Model was employed to determine the factors that might strongly contribute to the framework of implementing mobile learning mode. Then, a standard measurement ruler was devised using Rasch Analysis to measure how these factors are prioritized in language learning. The findings based on statistical analysis show that 11 of 68 items that were deleted from the questionnaire based on Rasch Analysis and almost 30 items were deleted for their insignificance status based on the Structural Equation Model using AMOS analysis. The seven variables are interaction, collaboration, mobility, immediacy, autonomy, perception on mobile learning and perception on mobile assisted language learning and were found to be significant to the proposed model. Overall, based on the Rasch analysis, mobility emerged as the most important factor that is widely agreed by the respondents. The findings based on the interviews with the seven respondents show that most students used their smartphone for easy access to dictionary in order to understand the meaning of words, utilizing translation facility for sentence construction and understanding, communicating through social media for informal discussion with colleagues as a means to stay abreast with the latest development in their study, and surfing the internet for related information in assisting their language learning. Finally, this study proposes a working model and a guideline for mobile English language learning for distance learners as well as recommendations for further research on distance language learners in mobile environment.,Certification of Master's/Doctoral Thesis" is not available
