Description: This study examined conference papers written by Iranian postgraduate students in Nanotechnology engineering adopting Hallidayan Systemic Functional approach. Mode of discourse was investigated through analyses of Themes and cohesive markers of 23 conference papers; 11 from Iranian universities and 12 from Malaysian universities. The conference papers of the Iranian students from Iranian universities were compared against those from the Malaysian universities to explore the characteristics of academic writing of the Iranian students as a result of studying in Malaysian universities which use English as the medium of instruction. Results of the textual analysis were triangulated with the data from a questionnaire that surveyed the perceptions of the Iranian students in Malaysia about academic writing. The questionnaire probed three aspects of academic writing; genre awareness, progress and improvement, and attitude and self-assessment. Then findings of the textual analysis and survey of the study were compared with results of past studies. It can be inferred that the Iranian graduate students did not develop the features of academic writing in their conference papers and that their perceptions concerning their progress and improvement in academic writing as a result of studying in Malaysia did not correspond with the textual analysis of this study. The findings implied that the conference papers of the Iranian graduate students lack the characteristics of academic writing and hence awareness-raising activities and grammatical instruction for pedagogic intervention are vital.,Ph.D.
