Description: Adopting effective reading strategies enables learners to utilize a more efficient use of time with maximum results in reading a text. This study was an attempt to identify the level of metacognitive awareness of EFL learners in reading expository texts and their cognitive strategies in making sense of such text in the Indonesian context. The research design is both quantitative and qualitative to cater for the two research perspectives. The sample for the study is 80 EFL learners who have been divided into two levels of proficiency, participated in the Metacognitive Awareness Reading Strategy Inventory (MARSI), a quantitative data collection instrument. From the sample, 10 respondents were selected to perform think-aloud protocols for gathering qualitative data on cognitive reading strategies. The findings indicated a high level of metacognitive awareness namely, Global, Support and Problem Solving Strategies for the proficient group. The less proficient group attained medium level on Support and Global Strategies with the exception of a high level of awareness for Problem Solving Strategy. The results suggest that metacognitive awareness is inherent within EFL adult learners regardless of their levels of proficiency. Content analysis of the think-aloud protocols revealed a wide range of cognitive reading strategies used by both groups. Despite the high level of metacognitive awareness and use of cognitive reading strategies, the quality of transfer to the students' reading task performance is low. This finding in turn will add to the existing corpus of knowledge in the field of language learning strategy in EFL context. The finding reaffirms the need for the design of strategy training focusing on raising learners' awareness and use of effective metacognitive and cognitive strategies to improve their reading performance.,Ph.D.
