Description: | This quasi-experimental study explored the effects of a Literature Online Support System (LitOSS) on a group of Form Four students in a high performing school in Malaysia. It focused on the effects of LitOSS on the students' motivation and learning strategies in the learning of English literature, a subject perceived as uninteresting and challenging. This research study was framed by the Social Cognitive Theory (SCT) of language learning and a model of motivation that is Keller's ARCS Model and a theory, the Social Cognitive Model of Motivation. The Cognitive Model of Learning & Information Processing was adopted to explore the students' strategy preferences pertaining to literature learning. The quantitative research instruments used were the adapted WebMAC Senior 4.0 and Motivated Strategies for Learning Questionnaire (MSLQ). Three focus group interviews were conducted for qualitative data elicitation. Descriptive and inferential statistics and thematic analysis using Atlas.ti 9 were employed for data analysis. Findings uncovered that LitOSS had significantly engendered a positive change in the students' motivation to learn literature due to its highly motivating design. The students were highly motivated intrinsically and extrinsically to learn literature through LitOSS but had moderate motivation in their self-efficacy and control of learning orientation. However, they did experience some anxiety when operating the system. With regard to learning strategies, students employed all three strategy types (i.e. cognitive, metacognitive, and resource management & control strategies) with greater prominence shown in the use of cognitive and metacognitive strategies. The study also reveals a strong correlation between motivation and LLS. Hence, it is possible to conclude that an online support system can enhance students' motivation to learn literature and promote the development of strategies that will enhance the learning of literature in Malaysian schools.,Ph.D. |
