Description: Past studies have maintained that the Arab learners still face many problems while communicating in the target language especially in writing. Thus, this research was carried out to investigate the grammatical tense errors of the simple past and past progressive tenses committed in writing by the Jordanian first, second, third and fourth year university English Foreign language students at Al-Mubarak University. It aimed to identify the types of errors that they committed in using the simple past and past progressive tenses and to identify the possible reasons for these errors. In addition, it also aimed to find out the students' grammatical competency of the simple past and past progressive tenses and the difference in the types of simple past tense and past progressive tense errors according to different class levels and gender. This study is a descriptive design that employed three data collection methods, namely, the free-writing task, a structured test and interviews. The data were elicited from 200 students during the class sessions. The data were analysed using descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA and taxonomic analysis in the light of the error analysis approach. Thus, the major findings of this research indicated that there is difficulty in using the simple past and past progressive tenses, there is a significant difference in the types of tenses according to class levels and there is also a significant difference in the types of tenses according to gender. Reasons for committing the errors included students' lack of knowledge, the carelessness of the students and overgeneralization. It is hoped that the results would help both lecturers and students of teaching and learning English as a second language in order to solve the problems arising from the students' inability to use tenses when expressing a particular point of view and to develop the skills necessary in the English writing.,'Certification of Masters/Doctorial Thesis' is not available,Ph.D
