Description: | Numerous studies on the sense of place have done based on psychological and physical approaches. However, the role of semi-public place design, especially in sense of place has not been adequately explored. This dissertation is focused on the significant of physical and functional characteristics with influence to sense of place dimensions to regenerate the sense of place in residents with trends to both mentioned approaches. Dominant ideology of modernism in construction of new urban spaces has caused the loss of sense of place and context of social life in neighborhoods. Meanwhile, neighborhood center in these new urban structures has been lost as a place with its territory, special identity, and potential to resolve daily needs, casual social encounters, safety and control. The purpose of the thesis is to explore this claim that concept of sense of place can be regenerated according to specific physical characteristics, activity and meaning. Therefore, an investigation on Miandeh neighborhood center was conducted as a case study in Boshrooyeh city, Iran. This study is comprised of two approaches: qualitative research to provide initial information to clarify the site selection criteria by field observation, interview, and participation observation; and quantitative research conducted by a survey questionnaire. Totally, 174 local residents were selected as respondents by simple random sampling for the survey investigation. Four domains of sense of place were considered through the survey, each in terms of particular aspects of place. The survey asked residents to rate their perceptions and importance of the neighborhood center features in their attachment, identity, social interaction and territoriality. The majority of the results represent that respondents' level of influence has a significant linear relationship with indicators of sense of place and place attributes. The study revealed that neighborhood center with its specific features plays an important role to regenerate a rich sense of place and its dimensions within. The results approved that residents who are native owners living in the Miandeh neighborhood for a long time expressed the highest level of feelings compared with other respondents. The principal conclusion was that neighborhood center could be developed in design and construction of new urban spaces to recreate the residents' sense of place. It provides a sociability and safety place in neighborhoods which residents have the sense of identity and attachment to it.,PhD |
