Description: The strength of a trade union depends on the capability of the trade union to increase the level of union participation and to retain a number of union memberships. The theory and literature suggest that it is important to understand the antecedents and consequences of union participation in order to increase trade union strength. However, there is still a gap in the literature related to the antecedents and consequences of union participation, specifically in the Malaysia context. Using the rational choice theory and norm of reciprocity, the present study hypothesized the role of pro-union attitude and perceived union support as antecedents of union participation. Further, using the social identity theory, the present study also hypothesized affective commitment and union turnover intention as consequences of union participation. Data were collected from 547 union members from the private sector in Malaysia. The study hypotheses were tested using structural equation modeling. The results of the study showed that pro-union attitude and perceived union support were positively related to union participation. The study also revealed that union participation was positively related to affective commitment but was not related to union turnover intention. Theoretically, the study contributed to the knowledge by providing some support for (a) the importance of pro-union attitude on union participation based on the rational choice theory, (b) the importance of perceived union support on union participation rooted by the norm of reciprocity, and (c) the importance of union participation on affective commitment based on the social identity theory. Practically, this study will assist union leaders to build a good relationship with union members in order to encourage them to participate in trade union activities. This study also helps union leaders to understand the importance of social identity elements that can influence the level of affective commitment of the union members.,Ph.D
