Description: Electronic mails (e-mails) have now been accepted as a form of records if they are created or received as part of performing employees’ official duties. As records, emails should be managed in compliance with prescribed procedures and guidelines. This study is carried out to identify whether electric companies in Libya are aware of e-mail as a form of records with value to be protected. Also, this study seeks to identify the existence of e-mail management guidelines in electric companies in Libya. This study adopts a combination of two methods: A survey method employing questionnaires as a data collection technique together with a content/document analysis method to analyse the content of existing e-mail management guidelines in developed countries. The questionnaires were distributed to randomly chosen samples in electric companies in the city of Tripoli. Two hundred and sixty four questionnaires were distributed; however, only two hundred questionnaires were returned and analysed. SPSS version 17.0 was used to analyze the collected data. The frequency and percentage of the respondents’ profiles was analysed using descriptive statistics while the Chi-Square test was used to discover the relationship between the issues studied. The findings of this study showed that the overall status of e-mail records management throughout electric companies is still at a low level: 62% of employees are not aware that the e-mail is indeed a crucial form of records to be managed and 45% assert that the companies do not have guidelines for managing e-mails. Meanwhile, 38% of employees were not sure whether the companies do have guidelines for managing e-mails. This study attempts to help electric companies in Libya to manage e-mail records more effectively.,Master/Sarjana
