Description: Ultimate limit state predictions of composite beam and design criteria are well-established with bending loads. However, the ultimate limit state of composite beam subjected to combined actions such as flexure with axial tensile loads, flexure with axial compressive loads and flexure with torsion, are not yet covered in the specific design guide lines of the established codes. The ultimate limit state of composite beam in partial shear connection subjected to bending and shear has not been covered adequately. In addition, the composite beam subjected to combined interaction of axial compression and positive bending, and the composite beam with metal-ribbed deck subjected to combined actions are not yet covered in literature. Therefore, this thesis will present innovative 3-D finite element (FE) models with non-linear material considerations to investigate the behaviour of composite beam with complex stress state due to combined actions. The developed models of composite beam with solid slab subjected to combined actions were validated with available experimental analysis. A parametric study was then carried out to investigate the ultimate limit state behaviour of composite beam with solid slab subjected to combined interaction of axial compression and positive bending, which is not existed in the open literature. The study shows that the various levels of axial compressions, which is applied in the FE model have significantly changed the capacity of composite beam. The interaction diagram between vertical and axial loads has been presented to represent a composite beam with combined interaction relationship of axial compression and positive bending. Composite beams with openings in web subjected to combined actions have also been investigated using the validated FE model. Six combined cases were used which are axial tension and positive bending, axial tension and negative bending, axial compression and positive bending, axial compression and negative bending, flexure and torsion, and bending and shear, with full and partial interaction Parameters investigated were openings geometry; shape, circle diameter, square width, openings position and distance between openings. Depending on the different combined actions applied, various failure mode were observed through the parametric study which were concrete crushing, excess yielding in the steel beam, shear stud failure , local buckling in the web and flange, ductile failure, reinforcement fracture and separation of deck. The significant deviations in axial loads, vertical loads and moment by means of FE models with openings and without openings are expressed in results. Afterwards, the FE models in the composite beam with solid slab were extended to composite beam with metal ribbed deck with a series of combined actions of the six cases. It is observed that the combined actions significantly reduce the ultimate strength of composite beam by excessive slip behaviour occur due to the axial tensile loads. Meanwhile, the ultimate strength of composite beam significantly decreases by compressive loads due to the local buckling in the web and flange of steel beam. The ultimate flexural capacities for a composite beam with metal-ribbed deck subjected to combined flexure and torsion are also presented. The various arrangements of shear studs and metal-ribbed deck were included with different combination of combined shear and positive bending and combined shear and negative bending. It was observed that there is reduction in ultimate strength and shear capacity due to weaker concrete by metal-ribbed deck in the subjection of combined bending and shear.,Master/Sarjana
