Description: | This thesis focuses on the materialization of memory in Mahmoud Darwish's poetry. A Palestinian poet, Darwish's literary contribution is considered to be an admixture of emotions: sorrow, passion and challenge as he wrote tirelessly about the loss of his homeland. By analyzing collective and individual memory from the perspective of Atkinson and Shiffrin's dual-store model, concepts such as “stimulus input”, “sensory register”, “short-term memory”, “long-term memory”, “rehearsal”, and “response output” are utilized to show how Darwish's poems exemplify collective memory and individual memory. Darwish's corpus is divided into two historical phases: the first phase is the period from 1960 to 1992, and the second phase is the period from 1993 to 2008. The context of each writing period illuminates the political circumstances of Palestine which were immortalized in his body of works. The Oslo Agreement that was signed in 1993 is considered as the turning point in this study. The concept of memory in Mahmoud Darwish's poetry before 1993 serves as the sound of the masses; in other words, it is collective memory. After 1993, Darwish addressed another type of memory which is the individual memory. In Darwish's works, collective memory appeared through national poems and motifs such as the image of the mother, the image of the father, and the olive tree. As for individual memory, it appeared clearly through personal poems where the “I” overwhelmed the “we”; hence, the significance of his motifs is deeply personal. By showing the difference between collective memory and individual memory, this study demonstrates the political and personal impact of Darwish's contribution to Palestinian resistance literature.,Master of Philosophy |
