Description: Vision impairment among preschool children requires early detection and prompt treatment to ensure they have good clear vision for learning activities. Currently, in Bangladesh there is little information available on vision impairment among preschool children. Furthermore, no program exists to screen vision impairment in preschool children. The objective of this study was to determine the effectiveness of a translated KieVision™ Preschool Vision Screening Kit (Kit) in the Bengali Language for Bangladeshi preschool teachers to improve the identification of vision impairment among preschool children. The translation of the Kit involved two forward and two backward translations in parallel by 2 optometrists and 2 language experts. Then this pre-translated version was submitted to an expert panel for harmonization and the production of the final version of the Bengali Language KieVision™ Preschool Vision Screening Kit. The reliability of the validation process was performed on the translated Kit. Lastly, the effectiveness of a vision screening program conducted by preschool teachers using the Kit was determined. A total of sixty preschool teachers from Chittagong were randomly selected and divided into study and control groups. Written tests were conducted on all these preschool teachers before and after the vision screening training program. The subject group was given complete vision screening training using the translated Kit whereas the control group was given training using the Chittagong Eye Infirmary and Training Complex (CEITC) School Teachers Training Module. Each preschool teacher was asked to conduct vision screening on 15 preschool children aged 4 to 6 years old. Optometrists then repeated the vision screening on the same children. The reliabilities value (internal consistencies) of the translated Kit for preparation and implementation of vision screening test questionnaires scales scored Cronbach's alpha coefficients of 0.87 and 0.82 respectively. For validity, the Kit had good factor loading values for 14 out of 15 items ranging from 0.49 to 0.86. The written test results showed that the preschool teachers knowledge about vision screening programs was only moderate (score of 48.37±11.25). Paired t-test showed a significant difference in both groups (study group t= -16.58, p<0.00; control group t= -17.88, p<0.00) of preschool teachers before and after training. The results showed a higher validity of vision screening findings by the preschool teachers in the study group (sensitivity=68%, specificity=86%) compared to the control group (sensitivity=47%, specificity=70.38%). The level of agreement between the preschool teachers in the study group and optometrists was high for all tests (ACI ≥ 0.88) while a lower level of agreement for all tests was found in the control group of preschool teachers. The sensitivity and specificity of the visual acuity test for the study group was 62.96% and 94.14% while in the control group was respectively 13.33% and 62.6%. A similar trend was noted in the general observation component and the Hirschberg's Test. The Bengali Language KieVision™ Preschool Vision Screening Kit is thus shown to be effective for use by preschool teachers for a vision screening program to improve identification of vision impairment among preschool children in Bangladesh.,Ijazah Sarjana Sains Kesihatan (Optometri)
