Description: | Reflection is a way of thinking about learning and helping individual learners to understand what, how and why they learn. Hence reflection was used as a tool to improve the learning of an individual by reviewing, analyzing and evaluating experiences in clinical practice. The aim of this research was to study the level of students' reflection and also to analyse the students' perception of writing reflective journals. A quantitative and triangulation approach was used in this study on 16 diagnostic imaging students. Initially a survey was done to determine the level of reflection which was followed by a reflective journal workshop. The comparison of mean score of understanding of reflection before and after the use of reflective journal during clinical practice showed an increase of 0.5 ± 3.46 for reflective practice which did not show a significant difference (p=0.57) as the duration of writing was short. The students' perception of reflective practice was obtained using triangulation approach via interview and focus group discussions. In the midst of clinical the first round of interview was done to obtain feedback and changes were done to improve the research process. Themes were generated from the feedback received, among them were: benefits of reflection, emotions and structured reflection. Majority of the students were positive about reflection. A few commented about being uneasy to write about feelings whilst a few did not like to write but did it due to mandatory requirements and assessment purposes. However, they agreed reflective process was beneficial as learning occurred when an experience is reflected and reviewed which linked theory to practice. In conclusion reflective writing should be introduced in the first year of studies for students to be reflectors before graduation.,Master of Health Sciences |
