Description: | Arabic poetry is replete with words and meanings of varied signification in word and meaning. Every poet has his style of selecting words to suit his poetical theme and employs it according to its suitable occasion. The poet Bashshar ibn Burd differs from his contemporary poets in forming his poetical text in terms of words which in their signification bear various styles that are varyingly weighed between the strength of word attractive to the audience with clear signification, and the absence of the meaning of the words in the poetical text. This study addresses one of the signification aspects of the structure of the poetry of Bashshar ibn Burd, i.e. by looking at the verses in the anthology of the poet which are presented differently in terms of structure. This is due to the poet who is moulded with social, political and religious surroundings, thus his poetry becomes the mirror of the circumstances be they happiness or sadness, negative or positive, love or hatred, panegyric or lampoon. These circumstances are obviously reflected in his feeling and emotion, thus his poetry expresses the circumstances. This study intends to identify the words with their meaning absent in some poetical text, and expose their significances by examining their position in the structure of the poetical text. Likewise, this study intends to elucidate new words the poet invents and strange words he intentionally brings into the poetical text. Also, it aims to reflect on the loss of the poet in his psychological and religious inclination and its effect in his poetical text. Thus, to accomplish this study, it is necessary to turn to historical analysis, reviewing the life of the poet and the various circumstances enveloping him. This is by turning to the tales as quoted in the books of language, literature and rhetoric concerning Bashshar, and his poetry and poetic talent. Likewise, this study employs analytical method to the verses of the poet encompassing the words with their true meaning absent, new and strange words, this includes the analysis of the verses of the poet containing expressions of his psychological and religious inclination. Having so said, this study points to significant findings from the poetical verses in the anthology of the poet Bashshar ibn Burd as are illuminated on its numerous pages, most importantly the language strength the poet possesses allows him to bring in words with their true meaning absent for certain purpose in his soul or the need to complete poetical meter. His poetry is distinguished from that of his contemporary poets due to his new words and poetical formation he invents or due to his revival of the formation of old words with new significances to satisfy the need of society. Therefore, his poetry becomes typically excellent compared to that of his contemporary poets. Likewise, psychological inclination is clearly seen in the behavior of the poet as can be seen in his poetic verses.,Certification of Master's/Doctoral Thesis" is not available |
