Description: | The use of magnification in endodontics has been instrumental in providing visual details for procedural intricacy and precision. This study aims to investigate the characteristics, pattern and opinion of Malaysian dental surgeons in using magnification devices in endodontics. In this cross-sectional study, respondents were approached through convenience sampling in dental congresses throughout the country. The questionnaire was pretested and validated before distribution and consisted of items on demographics, the pattern of use and non-use of magnification devices and the associated opinion. Out of 582 respondents, only 542 were deemed valid following elimination of ineligible participants and repetition. The proportion of Malaysian dental surgeons who employed magnification in endodontics is 24.9% (n = 135). Statistically significant association was found between the use of magnification with gender (p < 0.001), years of practice (p < 0.001), practice setting (p < 0.0083), practice institution (p < 0.001), possession of postgraduate qualification (p < 0.001), prior training on use of magnification devices in undergraduate education (p = 0.002) and prior attendance in short courses on magnification (p < 0.001). Dental loupes without illumination was the most common device employed (43.7%), followed by dental loupes with illumination (32.5%) and dental operating microscope (23.8%). The main reasons for using magnification devices were to enhance visual acuity (91.1%) and to improve body posture (8.9%) while the main reasons for not using such devices were the devices being expensive (38.5%) and lack of exposure to the technology (34.8%). Also noted, there was no statistically significant difference in opinion between users and non-users with regards to developing more refined clinical skills from undergraduate clinical training with magnification devices (p = 0.585). In conclusion, Malaysian dental surgeons are inclining towards the use of magnification devices when performing endodontic procedures as the awareness of the positive clinical and ergonomic impact disseminates.,Degree of Doctor of Clinical Dentistry in Endodontology |
