The Spiritual Pilgrimage of Al-Ghazali - More than eight centuries have passed since the death of al-Ghazali; but the pronouncement of ibn al-Subki, who followed al-Ghazali by 250 years, is still the judgement of the Moslem world--"If there had been a prophet after Mohammed, it assuredly would have been al-Ghazali." He quotes also the tradition that al-Shadhili, a mystic of the previous century, saw the Prophet Mohammed in a dream challenging Moses and Jesus to produce from among their people a righteous man like al-Ghazali; and they admitted they could not. Today his writings in philosophy, theology and the Sacred Law are still authoritative. His exhaustive work, Revivification of the Religious Sciences, in four large volumes containing over 1600 pages, is probably is probably best known. But his short epistle, O Disciple, written near the close the close of his life, summarizing for a learned shaykh his conclusions concerning the deepest meaning of religion, is perhaps even more important.en_US
