Abstract: | The rapid emergence of the Pacific Rim economies has significant implications for the pattern and intensity of international competition in industries raging from food to microeconomics. Led by Japan and the so-called "four dragons" (Taiwan, South Korea, Hong Kong and Singapore), these economies have become important players in the international technology marketplace. Through a combination of assertive government science and technology promotion policies and aggressive behavior on the part of private sector firms in the realm of R&D and technology acquisition, the so-called "East Asia edge" now includes a critical technological dimension. |
