Abstract: | In the era of globalization, carbon dioxide (C02) is well known as a major greenhouse gas. This gas is released into the atmosphere from human activities, industrial development including fossil fuel burning, chemical and petrochemical manufacturing as reported by Pevida et. al., 2008. The accumulated C02 traps the earth's heat, thus creating global warming which has already altered weather patterns and further increasing sea levels due to the melting of the polar iceberg. Therefore, research in developing C02 adsorbents must be taken in order to reduce the concentration of C02 in the atmosphere. High C02 concentrations can give negative effect towards environment. Amines are the most widely used organic chemicals for C02 capture due to their basicity. This allows them to react with acidic C02 to form a carbamate compounds. At present, porous materials are widely used as supporter such as silica dioxide, silica gel, activated carbon and many more. Supporter is important to improve the stability of the amine compound. In this study, physical and chemical modifications at the outer surface or interior channels of the supporter (silica gel, SG) using organic functional groups (tetradecylamine, TDA) have drawn much attention. The synthesized adsorbents were characterized by X-ray diffractometry (XRD) and Brunauer-Ernrnet- Teller analysis (BET). |
