This study was done to evaluate the antibacteria and antiviral activity from crude and fractionated plant parts of Garcinia hombroniana, G atroviridis, G cowa and G prainiana. Antibacterial activity of G hombroniana leaf methanol extract (GHD), G prainiana bark chloroform extract (CPT-I) and G prainiana leaf methanol extract (GPD- 2) was limited to gram positive bacteria and essentially in methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) isolates. All the crude extracts were not effective against gram negative bacteria. Test on fractionated crude extracts CHR, GCR-2, CHD, GPT-I, CPT-2 and CPD-2 showed an increase in antibacterial activity in at least two fractions namely CPT-I-4 and CPT-I-5, thus will be worth in further identification of lead compounds. Fractions of CCR-2 (CCR-2-I and GCR-2-2) however maintain their antibacterial activity to a variable extent. Only crude extracts CCR2 and CHD were found to be cytotoxic and not tested further for the antiviral activity. It is suggested that the activity for crude extract GCRI is believed to be attributed by combination of 3 fractions and mainly by CCRI-3. Crude extract GPD2 activity is supported by fraction CPD2-8, GPTJ by fractions CPTI-4 and CPTJ-7. In conclusion, G prainiana bark chloroform extract (CPT-I) and G prainiana leafmethanol extract (CPD-2) can befurther studied on antibacterial and antiviral activity since it is non-cytotoxic to normal cells.-
