Using problem-based learning to achieve high impact learning in mathematics and science education

Abstract

This session will provide an understanding of the philosophy and rationales PBL as an instructional strategy. Participants engage a PBl problem and are facilitated through the PBl process. A PBl framework is introduced. A conversation on curriculum implementation is sponsored. Participants leave the session with a deeper understanding of PBl's use in professional education and the higher quality of learning linked to intellectual capital development and problem-solving skills that result through the effective use of PSL Participants in the the session will be able to: (1)Demonstrate an understanding of the philosophy of PBl and the rationales for implementing it as an instructional strategy. (2) Describe the steps adhered to in PBl. (3) Describe a framework for the use of PBl and how to integrate it with current curriculum and current classroom practices. (4) Demonstrate an understanding of the concepts of facilitation that are aligned with and support PBL. Make distinctions between facilitating PBl as an instructional method and facilitating other activities and types of learning.
