The impact of BIS capital adequacy requirements on Australian banks

Abstract

This paper outlines the historical development of the banking industry in Australia with particular reference to developments since 1980. The impact of deregulation and the opening up of the banking sector to competition from foreign banks is examined. Statistics on market share of major Australian banks, state banks other established banks, new Australian banks and new foreign banks are included.
