SOME BACKGROUND INFORMATION ON THE MANU- FACTURING SECTOR 1.1 Way back in the early 1970's, during the formulation of the Second Malaysia Plan (1971-1975), the manufacturing sector was targeted as the engine of growth for the country. 1.2 It was realised even at that time that the manufacturing sector must, in time to come, take over from the agricultural sector, as the lea- ding economic sector in Malaysia in terms of its contribution to Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and employment. |
