Sarawak has a land area of approximately 124,520 sq km or just slightly smaller than the whole of Peninsular Malaysia. The biggest landuse is dryland forest, acounting for 60.7% of the total land area while the smallest landuse is for settlement purposes (0.1% only). Agriculture is estimated to take up 25% of the land area; here it is to be noted that permanent crops only used up 2.5% so far while the remaining 23.5% is attributed to shifting hill padi cultivation and wet padi. However, a large chunk of the hill padi land is fallow-land in any given time as the annual planted hill padi acreage is only about 80,000 ha each season.en_US
