Abstract: I am honoured to be invited to address the Seventh PEM Convention on Policy Adjustment or Structural Transformation for the Malaysian Economy. I was asked initially to talk on "Effects of and Responses to the Malaysian Economic Slump", but since I was sure this ground would be covered in great detail by my fellow panelists, I intend to address the question of the present slow- down with a longer-term perspective with a discussion of some issues for growth in the Malaysian economy in the 1980's. I would like to stress at the outset that any opinions expressed here are strictly my personal views and not necessarily those of Bank Negara Malaysia, where I work.
