| Abstract: | I appreciate the opportunity given to me this morning to participate in this Fourth Annual Convention of the Malaysian Economic Association. The particular Panel discussion, on the socio-political aspects of the New Economic Policy (NEP), certainly well-focussed, as the NEP has most far-reaching implications for the political and social development of Malaysia over the next decade or so. It is a total and comprehensive approach to development, which will result in significant structural changes in the pattern of development and the fabric of Malaysian life. I have chosen this morning to discuss the role of the bureaucracy in the implementation of the NEP, as the bureaucracy is a very significant sub-group in the socio-political structure. The success of the NEP will to a large extent depend on the manner and efficiency with which it implements the NEP. |
