The study area is part of a proposed Development Project area which extends over an area of about 2,00 square miles and covers 4 districts in a West Malaysia state. The study area itself covers 12,000 acres and consists of vast stretches of virgin land which has been mainly opened up in the last 15 years. There have been 2 main methods of agricultural development in the area (i) spontaneous squatter development (ii) government-sponsored settler development. In this paper we shall examine these two methods of development and relate it to the theme of local level development.en_US
