According to the 1981 report of the National Economic and Social Development Board, the economic development of Thailand in the past twenty years has never completed the proposal in raising the income of the rural people. Up to 10 million people or one-third of the rural families are in extreme poverty, as measured by international standards, while many millions more live just above or under the poverty line. Their real income stagnates or even declines. It was found that one- third of people in the north and south, and two-thirds in the northeast have an income of around 150 baht (approx. US$6) per month!en_US
