| Abstract: | Introduction There is probably no other area of India's environment that has been viciously attacked and destroyed in the last century than the country's forests. According to official statistics released by the Forest Depart- ment, India lost between 1951 and 1972, 3.4 million hectares of forest land to dams, new crop lands, roads and industries which means an annual rate of deforestation of about 0.15 million hectares. |
