Abstract: This paper will be divided into two parts. The first part will try to highlight some historical events experienced by the Orang Asli, which have played an important part in placing them into the present social positions vis-a-vis the wider national order. Until today Orang Asli are seen as marginal people with `primitive culture' who need government protection for their survival. The second part of the paper will explore the needs and approaches of forging the new and dynamic relationships of the Orang Asli with the wider national order. The new relationships should focus on respecting the dignity of the Orang Asli by granting them all rights enjoyed by other Malaysians. Orang Asli should be treated as equal members of the Malaysian society and should be regarded as important contributors to the process of nation building. The development of this relationship can be facilitated by awarding the Orang Asli sufficient opportunities for their continued existence and their progress. Among other things, this entails giving them access to basic social amenities, health services, opportunities and facilities for human capital formation, and control over resources. Also Orang Asli land rights must be given recognition, and provision to ensure economic and social security as well as encouraging individual or communal development initiatives on the land. These rights are to be reflected and incorporated into all relevant legislations as well as the Constitution of the nation.
