The paper discusses customary law of the Dayaks as a central guiding principle to administer justice. Customary law is also used as a form of social control nationally to keep the community together and also as a mechanism for their cultural and economic survival. The paper also discusses the historical development of the adat and how it is incorporated into the legal system of the modern state of Sarawak. In the modern context, it is used to unite the community to cope with the challenges of rapid development in order not to become just a consumer-oriented society.en_US
