Abstract: To predict general and local changes in the water quality and biocoenosis of the Baltic Sea it is necessary to develop calculation models, that differ in accuracy and complexity. The successful utilization of these models depends on the proper determination and knowledge of boundary conditions, among which the characteristics of the pollutants discharged into the sea play an important part. When predicting general changes in the Sea by means of the simplest models, the Box models (a review of models is given in the report by prof. A. Aitsam), it is sufficient to know the characteristics of pollutants discharged annually into the Sea (weight discharge). They may be determined either by indirect methods (calculated on the basis of average consumption per capita) or by direct methods based on measurements of the pollutants. For the determination of the characteristics of the pollutants one may use the manual, worked out by the Working Group on Pollution Research of the Baltic Sea of the International Council of Marine Research.
