Scientific investigation in the field of fishing techniques, is a relatively new development in fishery science. The aim is the improvement of known fishing methods and the development of new ones in agreement with information on fish behaviour. New methods can bring unexpected high yields, which can cause overfishing. Therefore sometimes any progress in fishing techniques as hampered, stock assessment and stock, preservation are not included in gear research. This has to be done by biological investigations to determine the quantity of fish, their age and size, which can be taken without injuring the productivity of a stock. With the help of gear research the best economic method can be found to exploit the stock.en_US
