With the increasing pressure by man upon his resources, there is rapidly growing need for more and better information for decision making and action programmes. Planning and management of resources demands more efficient and rapid methods to acquire and analyze this information. Remote sensing can assist in providing the required information to a great extent. Sri Lanka has a long experience in the application of remote sensing techniques to land resources planning and management. It was in mid-fifties that the aerial photographs were used, and the satellite images were introduced only after mid-seventies.en_US
