Agrotourism - a new dimension for the Malaysian tourism industry

Abstract

Between the zones of commercial tourism and eco-tourism lies an untapped dimension - AGROTOURISM. As an agricultural country, Malaysia abounds in the necessary basic ingredients to transform a fruit orchard, a padi farm, a palm oil or rubber plantation or a kelong into a vibrant hub of touristic activity. In my paper, I have merely touched the tip of the iceberg in projecting the potentials of agrotourism in a durian orchard, a national flora and fauna showroom and a kelong. The guidelines are almost similar in all the three examples although its applications may differ from case to case. In all three examples, the main idea is to provide an attractive ambience for those who would like a more meaningful as well as a more enjoyable experience. The underlying purpose of course would be to ensure that these visitors would return again and again. In all three examples, the basic infrastructure highlighted are: ( I) accommodation; (2) food and beverage outlets; (3) arts and crafts or souvenir outlets; (4) hobbyshops; (5) activities; and with relevant support systems in human resource training, supply and management. The planning and capital out-lay would be extensive in view of the time-span required for a return on investment. However, finance is not the only criterion as I personally feel that enthusiasm and creativity play the main roles in sustaining such projects.
