Despite numerous writings on the indigenous Malay polity, there has been no real focus on one aspect of the subject, namely, the traditional system of administration. Neither visitors to the Malay states in the days before the establishment of British administration nor later students of Malay society have shown a sustained interest in the subject. Existing literature reveals that what is best understood about the history of Malay society is the subject of power politics.en_US
