Surface sediments (0-5 cm) in fraction ≤ 63 µm from 21 stations along Klang River (Malaysia) were measured for total six metals concentration as well as some characteristics of the sediments such as pH, TOC and particles sizes between January and February 2009. The concentrations were ranged (μg/g, Fe%, dw) :Cd (0.57- 2.19); Zn( 31.89- 272.33); Cu (10.57- 52.87); and Fe (1.56- 3.03); respectively. High concentrations of trace metals were determined in fine-sized fraction. The degree of sediments contamination was computed by using an Enrichment Factor (EF) and Geoaccumulation index (Igeo). The result showed that Enrichment Factor and Geoaccumulation values of Cd were greater than those metals studied in downstream of Klang River were closer to the presence of baseline pollutants. Surface sediments in the Klang River were assayed with Sediment Quality Guidelines of Threshold Effect Level (TEL) and Probable Effect Concentration (PEC) (USEPA 2006). The result showed that none of metals concentration in the sediments of Klang River was greater than PEC values whereas metal concentrations in some stations exceeded the values for TEC. On basis of computed indices, Klang River can be classified as moderately polluted river.en_US
