Educating & empowering program for mangrove community as higher education social responsibility

Abstract

Mangrove farmers and their communities have important roles to maintain the coast ecosystem. Even though their roles are very strategic but their life are not welfare enough. STIE Perbanas as part of the community has responsibility to improve their welfare by educating and empowering them. There are two programs that continuously conducted by this higher education by involving faculty members and students. The first objective of these program is improving English abilities of young mangrove community in order to make them as a tourist guide to accompany international visitors, By practicing English help them achieving a good score in English course in their school. The second objective is empowering wife house to become more productive and can generate income for improving their family life. STIE Perbanas designed the training and coaching them based on their skills and resources. By creating value what they are doing and facilitating them to access the market, they get income and help them to finance their children education. The final evaluation of the program showed that visitor increase significantly as the impact of good services from young people who accompany the during visiting mangrove and the other hand income per house hold also increase.
