The administration of Muslim personal law = the Philippine experience

Abstract

To begin with, let me extend my sincerest appreciation to Dr. Ismail Bin Haji Ibrahim,, Director-General, Institute of Islamic Under-standing of Malaysia and other organizers of this all-important Regional Seminar on a subject of enthralling interest to millions of people in several countries of Southeast: Asia, three (3) of which are Muslim, namely: Malaysia, Indonesia and . Brunei; another three ( 3) are Buddhist, namely: Singapore 7 Thailand and Shri Langka; and only one Christian, the Philippines, -from which country I came as a member of about seven million (7,000,000) Muslim minorities. By way of introduction, the title o-F my paper, as shown above, may be discussed brie-fly in the -following subject matters, namely: (1) the Filipino Muslims or the so-called "Moros" in history; ( 2) the advent of the beginning Philippine Islam to the Philippines: of Sharia; (3) the highlights of civil laws affecting Filipino Muslims: (4) Adat or Muslim customary law in the Philippines - an overview: (5) problems of Sharia in the Philippines (6) recognition, codification and administration of Muslim personal law in the Philippines: (7) modern attitude towards Islamic law practices - worldwide: and (8) conclusion, epilogue.
