Abstract: Scholars and visitors to China have observed that China is very Chinese, yet under this 'Chineseness' there are a number of significant differences. This paper attempts to explain that 'same but different' phenomenon in the new society from a sociolinguistic point of view. It discusses the topic from three angles, familiarity and salutations among Chineses language universals and specific misunderstandings of Chinese; and kinship terms and social understanding.
