dc.description | Direct digital modulation of laser diode (LD) is used in most optical communication systems (OCSs) due to its simple implementation. Due to physical limitations, the output light of LD subjected to direct modulation cannot respond to the input digital signal instantaneously. Instead, there can be a delay and oscillations when the input digital signal has a large value and rapid variations. High speed isolated-free uncooled LDs are the key components for OCS as they can operate in uncooled environment without using optical isolators. It has been found from the literature review, that there is no comprehensive and accurate analysis for the pulse input response of uncooled LD subjected to external optical feedback (EOF) according to temperature-EOF dependence of laser cavity parameters. Re-examination of this topic will provide an accurate prediction to the performance of LD. In addition, new findings can be achieved when the analysis is performed according to a new point of view that relates the output of the device with the corresponding internal parameters. This thesis deals with the effect of temperature of operation and EOF on the pulse input response of digitally modulated LD. Firstly, for cooled LD, two full analytical models of turn-on time delay ( ) on t are derived and a novel interpretation to the effect of temperature dependence of Auger recombination coefficient on on t is presented. In addition, the whole transient pulse response of LD is then analyzed in presence of bit-pattern and dc-bias effects and cut-off/inoperable case of LD has been identified where LD would fail to start its operation due to relatively long on t and a corresponding model is presented. Secondly, for uncooled LD, the temperature dependence of pulse input response of uncooled LD is analyzed in presence of bit pattern and dc-bias effects giving a special attention to the temperature dependence of on t .
