Developing autonomous literature learning modules for undergraduate students: the UKM experience

Abstract

This paper is a report of part of an IRPA (Intensified Research in Priority Areas) project currently undertaken by seven UKM researchers on developing autonomous learning programmes for first year language and literature students. In view of the ever expanding scope of learning, it is pertinent that students be trained to be proactive, independent, and self directed as these will prepare them initially for their undergraduate studies and eventually for live long learning. This paper will examine the results of a survey carried to determine students' preparedness to undertake the learning of literature through an e-platform. The paper will also discuss how the project proposes to achieve the desired outcomes of producing firstly effective learners who are able to come to terms with their strengths and weaknesses and secondly, instructional materials which are mindful of learner readiness and interactive in nature. It would also look into the process of developing responsible and autonomous learners. Finally, it would provide an insight into the design and structure of the e-literature learning materials, especially the features that would compensate for the lack of teacher input and assistance.
