dc.description.abstract | Malacca was known as a centre of Islam in the Malay Achipelago since the 14th century. However it could not continue to carry out the above role because it was invaded by the Portuguese in 1511, and the Sultanate of Malacca took shelter in Johor. The Malacca Sultanate which established itself in Johor failed to play the previous role as continously involved in comflicts with the Portuguese. The role of Islamic centre in the Malay Archipelago was slowly taken over by Aceh in the northern tip of Sumatera. | - |
