dc.description.abstract | Culture, according to Tylor *as quoted by Hoijer (Hymes 1964:455) is 'that complex whole which includes knowledge, beliefs, art, morals, law, custom, and any other capabilities and habits acquired by man, as a member of society'. Hoebel (1971:208) defines culture as 'the integrated sum total of learned behavior traits which are manifest and shared by the members of a society'. Lado (1957:111) looks at culture as a structured system of patterned behavior and hence pays attention only to the observable parts of culture. He agrees with Hoijer that traits elements or patterns of culture are organized or structured into a system or set of systems, which, because it is historically created, is therefore open and subject to constant change.' Hoijer (1964:554). | - |
