English Language has played a significant role in the lives of the people and the formal education system of this country for more than 100 years. It was then the medium of instruction in a small number of elite schools and the 'key to academic, social and economic mobility for school leavers'. There was then never a shortage in the number of school leavers possessing sufficient proficiency in the language to seek admission in teacher-training institutions to pursue training courses in the teaching and learning of English.-
