Developing a module of teaching and learning on environmental education: modeling the science- technology-society (S-T-S) and outdoor approach

Abstract

The research aims to develop a teaching and module on environmental education (EE) based on two main approaches: the science-technology-society (STS) and outdoor. In the STS approach, students are provided with skills, exercises and training on the case studies related to environmental problems occurring in their everyday lives. Students address environmental issues through flexible activities namely role playing in small groups. Oral and written presentation of the issues are conducted by students. The outdoor approach (Waldrip 2007) enhances the learning of environmental issues in the classroom by extending the teaching and learning experiences through explorations and visitations to 1) the nature wilderness, 2) environmental education centers, 3) recycling plants, 4) landfills, 5) wildlife rehabilitation sites and other related environmental locations. In this approach students not only see and hear the environmental problems but also conduct small scale research to help minimize or solve the issue.
