Review comparison of mitigation method on urban heat island (UHI)in tropical region

Abstract

UHI (UHI) is a hot topic by this century, thus most of the research are done in urban area. The purpose of the paper is to compare the green spaces as mitigation method with other potential mitigation methods that can be apply in residential area. A series of comparatives analysis are done on mitigation methods. The comparison is made according to criteria's like the effect toward temperature, cost effectiveness, effect toward energy consumption and effect toward human health. The types of green spaces in Malaysia also being examined to identify the types of green spaces that is potential for mitigating UHI. The finding of this review will be used as parameter to do further computerize simulation. This is to confirm that different types of green spaces can give certain degree of effect towards mitigation of UHI. Green Spaces in urban residential area have more potential than other mitigating UHI. It can promote residents health, reduce the energy consumption, reduce air, water and sound pollution, reduce flood occurrence, and enhance the biodiversity of a place. The research will be basis for future researcher to do further investigation in mitigate UHI in tropical region.
