This paper explores the evolution of the politics of ethnicism in Malaysia from the period of Independence, through the NEP years, to the I990s. It is argued that a shift away from the politics of ethnicism towards a politics of developmentalism might be in the offing. However. while economic and cultural liberalisation have occurred, political liberalisation has not. No doubt a strong state is in place in Malaysia. But the lag in democracy is also a result of the new political culture gaining ground among the business and middle-classes. This political culture valorises consumerist habits dependent on rapid growth, in turn dependent on political stability guaranteed by the strong state.en_US
