From my experience as teacher, mathematics teaching and learning at school is monotonous, no variation in strategies being used. Teachers of mathematic dominate classroom activities, while students tend to be passive receivers. Students are not given the opportunity to develop their mathematics concepts themselves. Such situations may brings students less enthusiastic 10 learn. This, in turn my result in a lower achievement in mathematics reflected by national exam (ujian nasional) scores. This research first develops instructional material for functions at grade VIII using Realistic Mathematics Education approach. Furnished by these materials then I do these experiment to see if this teaching and learning approach is effective and if students achievements are better compared with the ones using the conventional approach. To produce the relevant instructional material I apply the modified four-D models suggested by Thiagarajan, Semmel and Semmel. The instructional materials obtained consist of (1) lesson plans, (2) teachers guide, (3) student book, (4) student activity sheets, and (5) achievement test. From the experiment I find that the realistic mathematics approach is effective in teaching and learning Function at grade VIII SMP 3 Sungai Lala. Province Riau.en_US
